The clash of the divas
By Leah C. Salterio
Dorina Pineda and Lavinia Arguelles were mere names in a komiks serial, but they became iconic big screen characters given unforgettable portrayals by Sharon Cuneta and Cherie Gil, respectively, in the memorable film, Bituing Walang Ningning.
Who can forget the classic line, "You're nothing but a second rate, trying hard copycat," which became famous even after a generation that the film had been shown?
Bituing Walang Ningning, which was immortalized by its theme of the same title (originally recorded by Sharon Cuneta, too), became a mini-series on ABS-CBN last May. Sarah Geronimo, touted as the Sharon Cuneta of her generation, was tapped to play Dorina, lending the series her acting talent and her innate vocal prowess that made her a singing champion.
Sarah as Dorina meets her idol-turned- arch-nemesis in Angelika de la Cruz as Lavinia Arguelles, the person who will torment her until the end.
The series gets major support from top-notch actors. Zsa Zsa Padilla plays Dorina's mom, Rosamia Suarez, while Ai-Ai de las Alas plays the adoptive mother Adora. Tonton Gutierrez is Dorina's dad, Emilio. Amy Austria is Lavinia's stage mom, Barbara.
John Prats is Gary, the musician friend of Dorina. Carlo Aquino is Dorina's childhood friend Oman. Ryan Agoncillo is Nico, the record producer who discovers Dorina and turns her into a singing superstar.
Dominic Ochoa is Larry Calma, the recording scion who puts his stakes on Lavinia. Miko Palanca is Zossimo, Nico's best friend and business partner. Carla Humphries is Rita, the rebel younger sister of Lavinia.
Tuesday Vargas is Libby, Larry's executive assistant and Lavinia's ally. Litte Big Star discovery Mica Roi Torre is precocious Bencho, Dorina's adoptive sister. Others in the cast are Chinggoy Alonzo, Chris Cayzer, Jay Perillo and Janus del Prado.
For several months, primetime viewers were glued to the boob tube to follow the plot of Bituing Walang Ningning – the journey of a young girl pursuing her dream of becoming a singing superstar only to find out that her family is more important than fame and fortune.
Viewers anticipated every new development in the inspiring family drama – the interesting twists and turns in the story, the secrets exposed in the lives of their favorite characters. They cried at every heartache and pain of the lead characters. They were kept on the edge of their seats with every cliffhanger.
They cheered and rejoiced at the triumph of Dorina, while loathing Lavinia's scheming ways. They sympathized with Adora's courageous battle with cancer and shed tears for Rosamia's search for her missing daughter as well as their tearful reunion. They laughed at Bencho's antics. They took to heart the poignant music performed in the series.
This week, the Clash of the Divas grand showdown happens in Bituing Walang Ningning, as Dorina and Lavinia belt it out on stage in their respective grand production numbers.
Dorina and Lavinia saunter on stage in the opening salvo, Crazy in Love. Then, they do their respective solo numbers of dance ditties and ballads – Dorina with I'm a Survivor, One Moment in Time and Sana'y Maghintay ang Walang Hanggan; Lavinia with Lose My Breath, Reflection and Dito Ba.
They duet in vocally challenging pieces like Enough is Enough and I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing. Zsa Zsa Padilla as Rosamia gets her moment on stage as she duets with Dorina in Bituing Walang Ningning. The song, of course, was finished by Lavinia, with the memorable sampaguita lei given to her by her long-time fan, Dorina
In the showdown taped at the Araneta Coliseum, the TV series captured the luster and poignant ending where Dorina gives up fame and fortune to be with her family and leaves the stage to her idol Lavinia.
Sarah, as we all know, is a product of a singing competition and is therefore regarded as a good performer. But in the showdown at Araneta, Angelika proves she also got what it takes to pit singing talents with a singing champion.
Watch the Clash of the Divas showdown in Bituing Walang Ningning tonight and tomorrow night on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida. Jollibee and ABS-CBN, meanwhile, will air on Oct. 15, the Pasasalamat concert which was taped after the showdown at Araneta Coliseum.

Kylie and Oman look on with excitement as Dorina struts across the stage and opens the first song of the night, Crazy in Love, with backup dancers accompanying her. Lavinia walks across the stage to sing the second stanza and Larry applauds. Nico watches intently from the audience as well. Lavinia and Dorina perform the remainder of the song together after the second stanza. The audience applauds wildly at the end of the song.
Lavinia and Dorina take turns to greet the crowd. Dorina graciously says it's a pleasure for her to be on stage with her idol, Lavinia. When she asks the crowd to show their support, different sections of the crowd scream the names of their respective idols.
Lavinia interprets the applause to be overwhelmingly in her favor. She tells the crowd to give Dorina a chance. Then turns the floor over to Dorina.
Dorina performs her song, I'm a Survivor and Emilio is on his feet applauding as his daughter performs. When Dorina finishes the song, the crowd chants Dorina's name.
Lavinia's fans start chanting her name as she comes out on stage and performs her first solo number, Lose My Breath with dancers backing her up.
At the end of her song, Lavinia tells the crowd that some people are born to be stars, while others are born to just watch from the sidelines. She then presents "her #1 fan" Dorina Pineda.
Dorina comes out on stage dressed in a beautiful, elegant gown and starts to sing One Moment in Time. Bencho cheers from her seat, while beside her Emilio wipes away tears of joy and pride as he watches Dorina on stage.
The crowd starts chanting Lavinia's name as Dorina's song ends. Dorina thanks the crowd. She says to the audience that they are very important to her. She remarks that she never once thought that she'd one day take part in a concert at the Araneta Coliseum. Nico and Zossimo listen intently. Dorina says that as Lavinia said, she is just a fan who longed to be a singer. She reached her dreams because of the support of her fans, and because of her inspiration, Lavinia Arguelles.
Lavinia appears on stage and starts to sing. Barbara, Rita, Nico, and Larry watch intently as Lavinia sings Reflection. Nico smiles tenderly as he watches Rita and Barbara wipe away tears.
Lavinia and Dorina perform the next two songs, Enough is Enough and I Don't Want to Miss a Thing together. Dorina starts having difficulty breathing and struggles to complete the songs. Nico, Zossimo, Adora, and Emilio grow worried as they watch Dorina coughing on stage.

Dorina and Emilio learn from the doctor that Adora's lymphoma is now in Stage 4 and that Adora's health is deteriorating rapidly. The doctor warns them to prepare for the worst.
The fans at the Araneta Coliseum are screaming loudly in anticipation.
Lavinia hears rumours that Dorina may not make it to the showdown because of Adora's health, and that she may win the showdown by default. Lavinia is not happy about this, because she wants to people to see how well she will outshine Dorina.
Rosamia is asked if she plans to watch Dorina's concert. She says no.
Adora urges Dorina to go to Araneta to push through with the concert. She says Dorina should not disappoint all the people who are there, nor should she disappoint Adora by not performing. Adora insists on going to the Araneta Coliseum to watch Dorina perform, saying her condition can't get much worse given the state that she's already in. At least she'll get to see her daughter on stage on the most important night of her career, because this is the fulfillment of their dreams.
A reporter asks -- who will be crowned the concert queen tonight? as fans scream their support for their respective idols.
Rosamia answers yes, when she is asked if she will leave with the recruiter.
Larry asks Libby to go help Lavinia on the night of the concert, but the singer upsets Libby with her petty complaints and endless errands. Libby asks Lavinia to change her tone, but the singer says Libby is being paid to do all this. Libby tells Lavinia that the day will come when she'll look up and Larry won't be there anymore, and her family won't be there for her either. She may be incredibly successful, but she will also be utterly alone.
Oman visits Dorina in her dressing room. He tells her she looks beautiful, then hands her a bouquet of white roses. He asks her if she remembers what those flowers mean. When Oman leaves the dressing room, Dorina asks him to take a seat in the front row, especially since her nervousness disappears whenever she sees him.
Rosamia is getting ready to board the van that will take her and other overseas contract workers to the airport. As the recruiter asks them the other performers how they can perform without a choreographer, Rosamia is outside the van, looking at her concert ticket. She remembers her last conversations with Adora and Emilio... that she cannot escape her feelings.
Rita and Barbara stop by Lavinia's dressing room to greet her and she thanks them. Lavinia asks them to leave so she can concentrate. She says they may be left behind by their friends who will be sitting at the seats that Dorina has reserved. They tell her that they'll be seating in Lavinia's reserved seats. Rita says they will support her. Barbara adds that she is proud of Lavinia and kisses her. Lavinia is moved to tears.
At last, all the overseas contract workers have arrived and they can leave. The recruiter asks Rosamia if she is alright. Rosamia boards the van. The recruiter asks her again if she's alright. Another of the contract workers remarks that she is so sad to be leaving her child. When the contract worker says she might go insane with sadness, Rosamia overhears the remark and cries.
The concert is about to start. The Araneta Coliseum is packed with people. And it looks like Lavinia will start the concert...
